Zangezur corridor to become vital transport link connecting Europe and Asia, Turkish FM says

10 August 2025 08:52

If implemented, the Zangezur corridor will become an important part of a continuous transport route from Europe to the depths of Asia, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said.

At a joint press conference with his Egyptian counterpart, he said the Zangezur Corridor would be a key link connecting Türkiye with the Turkic world through the Caucasus and the Caspian Sea, as well as linking the Turkic states with Europe via Türkiye and, further, with Asia, Caliber.Az reports, citing local media.

“This will be a multifunctional route. I believe that the agreement reached in Washington is a very important and positive development, and I hope the corridor will be implemented in the near future,” the Turkish top diplomat stressed.

The announcement follows a landmark trilateral summit in Washington, D.C., on August 8, 2025, hosted by U.S. President Donald J. Trump, where Azerbaijani and Armenian leaders took significant steps toward peace and regional cooperation.

The Washington summit, the first of its kind since the Soviet Union’s collapse, brought together Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, and President Trump. The leaders signed a joint declaration outlining a framework for peace, emphasizing sovereignty, territorial integrity, and the rejection of force. A draft peace agreement, titled “Agreement on Establishment of Peace and Inter-State Relations between the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Republic of Armenia,” was initialed by the countries’ foreign ministers, marking a milestone in resolving the decades-long Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict.

A centrepiece of the summit was the agreement to establish the “Trump Route for International Peace and Prosperity” (TRIPP), commonly referred to as the Zangezur Corridor. This transit route will connect mainland Azerbaijan to its Nakhchivan exclave through Armenia, facilitating intra-state and international trade. Fidan hailed the Washington agreement as a “very important and positive development,” expressing optimism that the corridor would be operational in the near future. The U.S. may play a role in managing the route for up to 99 years, though details on security, tariffs, and operations remain under negotiation.
