Iran pushes for embassy reopening with Syria amid ongoing diplomatic efforts
Iran is engaging in diplomatic consultations to facilitate the mutual reopening of embassies with Syria, according to government spokesperson Fatemeh Mohajerani.
She stated that Tehran places significant importance on preserving Syria's territorial integrity and ensuring the formation of a government in the country that reflects the will of its people, Caliber.Az reports via Iranian media.
Speaking at a briefing, Mohajerani stated, “Our approach to the issue of embassy operations in Syria is diplomatic. We are ready, and they are ready. We are conducting diplomatic consultations on the opening of embassies between the two countries.”
“Preventing the spread of terrorism is important for both us and the region,” she noted.
However, Mohajerani did not provide further details regarding the diplomatic process involved in reopening the embassies.
To recall, Iran stated that it intended to maintain relations with Syria even if President Bashar al-Assad's government fell, but emphasized that the approach of opposition groups towards Israel would be pivotal.
Iranian spokesperson Fatemeh Mohajerani called for respect for Syria's territorial integrity, asserting that the Syrian people should decide their own future. Hossein Salami, commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), confirmed the withdrawal of Iranian forces from Syria but denied any loss of Iranian influence in the region.
Meanwhile, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warned that Israel would take "necessary" measures to prevent Iranian re-establishment in Syria or the transfer of weapons to Hezbollah, stressing that Israel's actions would be for security reasons and not an interference in Syria's internal affairs.
