Iran to execute scientist of Azerbaijani origin

Ahmedrza Jalali, a citizen of Sweden and Iran of Azerbaijani origin, accused of spying for the Israeli National Intelligence Service (Mossad), will be executed on May 21 by the decision of the Supreme Court of Iran, İRNA reports.

It is noted that as a result of transferring secret information about the nuclear program of the Islamic Republic to Israel, two Iranian nuclear scientists were killed. One of them is the country's leading scientist in this field, Mohsun Fakhrizade, who was mortally wounded on November 27, 2020. The Iranian side claims that his assassination was organized by the Israeli secret services.

A scientist from South Azerbaijan, Ahmedrza Jalali, was arrested on charges of espionage during his visit to Iran in May 2016 at the invitation of the University of Tehran. In 2017, the court sentenced him to death.

This decision was also approved by the Supreme Court of Iran.

After graduating from medical school, A. Jalali worked at the Natural Disaster Center of Iran. In order to continue his education in 2009, he moved to Sweden, where he received a doctorate. After graduating from Pierre Mento University in Italy, he settled in Sweden with his wife and two children. His project at an Italian university was related to improving the performance of medical centers during natural disasters in underdeveloped countries.
