Iranian foreign minister warns of expanding terrorist threat in region
Iran's Foreign Minister, Abbas Araghchi, has warned that rebel groups currently operating in Syria could extend their activities to neighboring countries, including Türkiye, Jordan, and Iraq, unless decisive action is taken to eliminate them.
Speaking at a joint press conference in Baghdad alongside his Syrian and Iraqi counterparts, Araghchi emphasized the regional security implications of failing to curb the spread of terrorism in Syria, Caliber.Az reports citing Russian media.
According to Araghchi, the threat posed by terrorist factions is not confined to Syria and could soon jeopardize the stability of other nations in the region. "Terrorists will not be limited to Syria; the threat is spreading to the entire region and will move to other countries such as Jordan, Türkiye, and Iraq," he stated.
The Iranian foreign minister underscored the urgency of addressing the situation before it escalates further, calling for terrorism to be "nipped in the bud." He also highlighted the importance of regional cooperation, stating that safeguarding the security of neighboring countries is essential to protecting the broader region. "If we want to protect our security, we must protect our neighbors from terrorism," Araghchi added.
The diplomat also stated that "anyone who overlooks the role of the Zionist regime (Israel) in the Syrian crisis is making a mistake." Araghchi reiterated his belief that the activation of militants in Syria is the result of a "US-Israeli conspiracy," and he emphasized that "countries that remain silent or support these terrorist actions should be held accountable."
