IRGC member killed in US strike on Iran
A member of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has been killed following US strikes on Iranian territory, Iranian officials reported.
According to a representative of one of the IRGC’s units, the serviceman was killed in the morning while attempting to repel an attack by an enemy drone.
Tensions between Iran and the United States have escalated after a new round of military strikes and counterstrikes in the Gulf region. The latest escalation began after Washington launched attacks on southern Iranian port areas, saying they were a response to Iranian strikes on commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz.
Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) later announced large-scale attacks on US military facilities in the Middle East, claiming strikes on American bases in Bahrain and Kuwait, as well as the downing of a US MQ-9 Reaper drone. Iran said the attacks were a response to what it called US aggression.
Bahrain subsequently reported another wave of missile attacks, with air raid sirens activated across the country. Tehran warned that US facilities in the region would remain targets if Washington violated the ceasefire agreement.
The clashes follow previous disruptions of a US-Iran ceasefire in late June, which were also linked to attacks on commercial shipping in the Gulf. Despite renewed diplomatic efforts, maritime security and freedom of navigation in the region remain major points of tension.
