Kyrgyzstan backs US-brokered peace agreements between Azerbaijan, Armenia
Kyrgyzstan supports the peace agreements reached between Armenia and Azerbaijan in Washington.
The statement was made by Nurlanbek Turgunbek uulu, Speaker of the Jogorku Kenesh (Parliament of Kyrgyzstan), during a meeting with Alen Simonyan, Speaker of Armenia’s National Assembly, who is on an official visit to Kyrgyzstan, Caliber.Az reports, citing Kyrgyz media.
“This historic event will not only strengthen friendship between the two countries but also contribute to stability and development in the South Caucasus and the wider region,” Turgunbek uulu said.
The parliamentary leaders discussed strengthening political, economic, cultural, and humanitarian ties, as well as expanding inter-parliamentary cooperation. Turgunbek uulu also underlined Kyrgyzstan’s interest in developing cooperation with Armenia on international platforms and within integration organisations.
The initial peace agreement, signed on August 8, in Washington, D.C., under US mediation, marks a historic step toward resolving the decades-long conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan. The agreement, initialled by Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan in the presence of US President Donald Trump, includes provisions for a ceasefire, diplomatic relations, and the establishment of the Zangezur Corridor, dubbed the “Trump Route for International Peace and Prosperity” (TRIPP).
This corridor aims to connect mainland Azerbaijan with its Nakhchivan exclave through Armenian territory, managed by a U.S.-led consortium under a 99-year lease while respecting Armenian sovereignty.
