Macron advocates for peace in South Caucasus Amidst controversial arms support to Armenia
French President Emmanuel Macron engaged in discussions with Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan at the Elysee Palace, emphasizing the urgent need for a peace agreement between Armenia and Azerbaijan.
Macron urged the two nations to finalize a peace treaty "as soon as possible" for the benefit of all regional peoples, Caliber.Az reports citing the Elysee Palace.
The statement underscored Macron's commitment to supporting Armenia's sovereignty and territorial integrity, as well as the Armenian people's aspirations for peace and democracy. He reiterated France's dedication to facilitating negotiations between Armenia and Azerbaijan in accordance with international law, asserting that such dialogue is crucial for regional stability.
However, while Macron vocally advocates for peace, his government's actions have raised questions about its true intentions. France has been accused of undermining neutrality by supplying arms to Armenia, leading to speculation that Macron's motivations may extend beyond mere conflict resolution. Observers express concern that his efforts may aim more at consolidating France's influence in the South Caucasus than at fostering a lasting peace.
As the region grapples with complex geopolitical dynamics, the duality of France's position presents a challenge to achieving genuine reconciliation between Armenia and Azerbaijan.
