Mortality rate exceeds birth rate in Georgia
The National Statistics Service of Georgia has revealed that the mortality rate in the country has surpassed the birth rate.
Georgia recorded 40,214 births, marking a 5% decrease from the previous year in 2023. Among these newborns, 21,010 were boys and 19,204 were girls, Caliber.Az reports citing Georgian media sources.
Conversely, the number of deaths reported in Georgia in 2023 stood at 42,756, indicating a decrease of 13% compared to 2022. Despite the reduction in mortality, the gap between births and deaths has led to a concerning demographic imbalance.
In 2022, the birth rate exceeded the death rate, with 42,319 births compared to 49,118 deaths. However, the recent data paints a different picture, highlighting a reversal of this trend.
The implications of a declining birth rate coupled with a persistent mortality rate could have significant socio-economic repercussions for Georgia in the long term. Demographic imbalances often pose challenges for healthcare systems, labour markets, and pension schemes, among other aspects of society.
