New chapter in Syria-Türkiye ties as Damascus appeals for military help

The Syrian government has formally approached Türkiye with a request for assistance in bolstering its defence capacity and combating terrorist organisations, with a particular focus on the fight against ISIS.

The information was disclosed by sources within the Turkish Ministry of National Defence, Caliber.Az reports, referencing Turkish media sources.

“In response to this official request, we are continuing our efforts to provide Syria with training, advisory services, and technical assistance aimed at strengthening its defence capabilities,” representatives of the ministry stated.

The ministry sources underscored Türkiye’s unwavering commitment to key priorities in Syria, including the protection of the country’s territorial integrity, the preservation of stability, and the fight against terrorism.

“The Ministry of National Defence is working in close coordination with the newly formed Syrian government. Türkiye’s principal objective is to support Syria’s political unity and territorial integrity while contributing to efforts to establish lasting peace in the region,” the ministry emphasised.

Officials from the Turkish Defence Ministry further noted that ensuring Syria’s territorial integrity and sovereignty is vital not only for Syria’s future but also for the broader stability of Türkiye and the region.

Addressing recent developments, the sources referred to the agreement reached on March 10 between the Syrian government and the armed group known as the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF). They stated that the issues agreed upon in that accord have a direct impact on the situation on the ground.

“We are determined to support the stabilisation process. The SDF, which we regard as a terrorist organisation, must clearly demonstrate adherence to the terms of its agreement with Damascus. Our relevant institutions are closely tracking developments related to this matter,” the ministry sources added.
