Official: Zangezur Corridor to strengthen Azerbaijan-China cooperation
The implementation of the Zangezur Corridor project will unite partner countries, including Azerbaijan and China, and strengthen their cooperation, said Tahir Budagov, Deputy Chairman of the Yeni Azerbaijan Party (YAP).
Budagov highlighted that, amid rising global challenges, the issue of constructive cooperation between the Global South and the Global North is increasingly pressing, Caliber.Az reports, citing local media.
At a conference in Baku titled "Azerbaijan-China Strategic Partnership: Consolidating and Advancing Cooperation in the Global South" he emphasised the need for a new model of cooperation based on the principles of mutual respect for national interests and fairness.
"Azerbaijan and China, as supporters of a multipolar political order, maintain a firm stance against phenomena that pose significant threats to international security. We follow an independent, resolute, and constructive policy, promoting dialogue and cooperation on a global scale," he said.
Budagov further noted that, in light of new global realities, Azerbaijan and China have the potential to lay a strong foundation for a prosperous and peaceful future for humanity.
Earlier, Aytan Turabova, Senior Advisor at Azerbaijan's Transport Ministry said that, Azerbaijan is focusing on enhancing the Middle Corridor's freight capacity to 11 million tonnes by 2030, according to.
At a roundtable on transcontinental megaroutes, Turabova highlighted the need for both infrastructure upgrades and logistical improvements to achieve this goal. She noted that Azerbaijan has been investing in transport infrastructure for over 20 years, underscoring the strategic importance of the East-West and North-South corridors in boosting global connectivity and economic growth.
The Goranboy-Agband railway project, linking Azerbaijan’s Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic to Türkiye via the Zangezur Corridor, is key to this expansion, with a projected increase in freight capacity by 10-12 million tonnes.
