Thirty-five people were injured after seven cars of a passenger train travelling from Chelyabinsk to Moscow derailed in Russia’s Ulyanovsk region on the morning of April 3, Governor Alexey Russkikh said, updating an earlier figure of 24 injured.
According to Russkikh, cited by Russian media, 18 of the injured have been hospitalised. “Two of the injured have multiple injuries. The rest are in a mild condition,” he wrote on his Telegram channel.
Some of the victims were transported to medical facilities in Ulyanovsk and Dimitrovgrad, while others are receiving outpatient treatment. Hospitalisation was not required for the injured children, who sustained minor abrasions and bruises, the governor added.
The derailment occurred near Bryandino station. A total of 412 passengers were on board the train at the time of the incident.
Authorities have opened a criminal case on charges of violating railway traffic safety and operation rules. According to Russia’s Investigative Committee, the preliminary cause of the derailment was the poor condition of the railway track.
