Press secretary: Putin not yet decided on Easter ceasefire with Ukraine
President Vladimir Putin has not yet made a decision on a potential Easter ceasefire with Ukraine, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said on April 9.
Peskov told reporters that no formal proposal had been clearly articulated in remarks by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, and that Moscow had not seen a structured initiative on the matter, Caliber.Az reports per foreign media.
Zelenskyy said in late March that Ukraine was ready to observe a ceasefire over the Easter period. Ukraine’s Defence Intelligence chief Kyrylo Budanov also indicated that Kyiv and Moscow could potentially carry out a large prisoner-of-war exchange.
Earlier, on April 6, Ukraine proposed a separate energy ceasefire to Russia, though there has been no confirmation of progress from the Kremlin.
Peskov reiterated that discussions of a broader ceasefire remain unresolved, saying no decision had been made by Putin.
Separately, Peskov commented on reports in British media that Russia’s navy had begun escorting tankers in European waters.
Responding to coverage in British media, Peskov said incidents of piracy had occurred in recent months and had caused damage to Russian interests. “We consider ourselves entitled to protect our interests,” he said at a briefing.
The coverage reported that the frigate Admiral Grigorovich had escorted the tankers Universal and Enigma through the English Channel after UK authorities threatened to detain vessels linked to Russia’s so-called “shadow fleet.”
