Resident Coordinator: UN fully supports Azerbaijan's COP29 chairmanship
The UN is committed to supporting Azerbaijan's measures to combat climate change even after COP29 in November.
The UN Resident Coordinator in Azerbaijan, Vladanka Andreeva, made the statement while addressing the Environmental, Social and Corporate Governance (ESG) Summit on Public-Private Partnerships for Sustainable Development, Caliber.Az reports via local media.
"Our climate conversations are really about catalysing nationwide dialogue and action on climate change and just transition. Today's event is the 15th climate dialogue we have organized. As the UN family, we are fully committed to supporting the COP29 chairmanship and engaging with all stakeholders to ensure that climate action not only continues to gain momentum but also continues beyond COP29," she said.
The Resident Coordinator stressed that the aim of today's event is to seek to foster dialogue and collaboration "so that public and private organisations can share strategies to find better solutions".
In November, Azerbaijan will host COP29, a decision finalized during the COP28 plenary meeting held in Dubai on December 11, 2023. Baku is set to become the global focal point, expecting to welcome approximately 70,000 to 80,000 international guests.
The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) was established at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in June 1992 to mitigate human interference with the climate system. The Conference of the Parties (COP), comprising 198 member countries, serves as the supreme body overseeing the implementation of the UNFCCC. Unless agreed otherwise, COP meetings are held annually, with the inaugural event occurring in March 1995 in Berlin and the secretariat based in Bonn.
