Tehran calls on UN to act on Israeli aggression, expects BRICS to condemn attacks
Tehran has urged the United Nations Security Council to fulfill its responsibilities regarding Israel’s recent attacks against Iran, dismissing calls for restraint as “nothing but hypocrisy.”
Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Esmail Baghaei issued the strong condemnation during a press briefing on June 16, condemning international complicity in what he described as Israel’s aggressive acts, Caliber.Az reports per Iranian media.
“We clearly declare that all the countries that supported the Zionist regime or sought to justify this aggression are considered accomplices to Israel aggression against Iran,” Baghaei asserted.
He warned that “The impunity for the crimes of this regime and the all-round support of the US and Western countries have caused the peace and security of the region and the world to be exposed to an unprecedented threat.”
Baghaei specifically condemned Israel’s recent strikes on residential areas and peaceful nuclear facilities, stating, “The attack on Natanz Isfahan nuclear facilities absolutely violates all international norms and rules.” He emphasized that the Security Council must act decisively, adding, “The UN Security Council must fulfill its duties; Demanding restraint is nothing but hypocrisy.”
Characterizing the ongoing conflict, Baghaei framed the war as more than a bilateral dispute: “This war is not only against Iran; It is a war against humanity. This conflict is not a conflict between governments over border or ideological differences, but a war waged by an occupying entity and apartheid.” He further underscored the gravity of the situation by saying, “This war is against the United Nations Charter, against the rule of law, and against all the values that humanity has fought for.”
In a related development, Iran is looking to the BRICS bloc to issue a condemnation of Israel’s aggression. Baghaei noted that the BRICS group is scheduled to convene on June 16-17 to discuss the Iran-Israel conflict, expressing hope that it will take a firm stance similar to that of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO).
“In recent years, special mechanisms have been created within the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) and BRICS for their member states to cooperate with each other. The SCO has issued a good statement, condemning the Zionist regime’s attack. BRICS will also hold meetings today and tomorrow, and we are in contact with the member states in order to communicate our views to them,” the spokesperson said at a weekly briefing.
“We hope and expect that just like the SCO, BRICS will also adopt a position, recognizing the reality in our region, where a criminal regime has illegally launched an armed attack on another country,” the Iranian diplomat added.
