Tehran signals openness to restoring ties with Damascus, emphasizes Syrian interests as priority

Iran has expressed its readiness to restore diplomatic relations with Syria but made it clear that any such move would be carefully weighed against the interests of the Syrian people.

The announcement was made by Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei during a press briefing, Caliber.Az reports, citing Iranian media.

Baghaei reaffirmed Tehran’s longstanding solidarity with Damascus, noting that despite the current suspension of formal ties, the relationship between the two nations—bound by deep historical, religious, and cultural connections—remains fundamentally intact.

“Iran considers itself a friend of the Syrian people and believes that the suspension of ties between the two Islamic countries with a long history of friendship is not permanent,” Baghaei stated.

The spokesman stressed that Iran's approach to any re-engagement with Syria would be grounded in the principle of respect for the rights of all ethnic and social groups within the country, reiterating Tehran’s support for an inclusive political future for Syria.

In a firm condemnation of recent Israeli military actions on Syrian territory, Baghaei denounced the attacks as violations of Syria's sovereignty and reiterated Iran’s call for the preservation of the Arab country's territorial integrity and national unity.

Commenting on the potential normalization of relations, Baghaei underlined that Iran would not be rushed into any diplomatic overture, insisting that timing must align with broader considerations for stability and the welfare of the Syrian people.

On the restoration of diplomatic relations, Baghaei stated that Iran is not in a hurry, but noted that whenever it is determined that renewed friendship with Iran aligns with the interests of the Syrian people, both sides will be ready to reestablish ties.
