TRNC leader emphasizes strong ties with Azerbaijan, seeks broader Turkic unity

12 April 2025 12:55

Azerbaijan has long been a close ally of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), and it continues to support Lefkosa's fair stance, according to TRNC President Ersin Tatar.

During a recent interview with Turkish media, Tatar highlighted the ongoing growth in bilateral ties, noting a significant influx of delegations from Baku, including members of the Milli Majlis, and a steady stream of TRNC delegations visiting Baku, Caliber.Az reports via Azertag.

This marks an active and comprehensive development in relations between the two countries.

Tatar expressed his belief that, at some point, all Turkic nations, including Azerbaijan, would follow Türkiye’s lead and elevate their relationship with the TRNC to the highest level of independent actors in international law. He explained, "We hope that at some stage all Turkic states, including Azerbaijan, will follow the example of Türkiye and raise relations with the TRNC to the highest level of independent international actors."

The TRNC leader also emphasized the importance of strengthening ties with the member states of the Organization of Turkic States. "At this stage, the priority is to develop relations comprehensively with the member states of the Turkic States Organization," Tatar said. He added that the aim is to "unlock the potential of these relationships, particularly in sectors such as tourism and education." He strongly believes that this is the path that could ultimately lead to the TRNC's recognition on the international stage, stating, "This is the path that leads to recognition."

Tatar also addressed the continued presence of Turkish armed forces in Cyprus, calling them essential to the safety and security of the Turkish Cypriot community. "We do not intend to abandon cooperation with Ankara. If Turkish forces withdraw, Cyprus will become a very dangerous place," he warned.
