Turkic nations take major step with creation of International Road Carriers Union Within OTS / PHOTO
The founding agreement for the Union of International Road Carriers of Turkic States (URTA) was signed in Istanbul, signifying a major step toward enhancing regional transportation collaboration among Turkic nations.
According to the Association of International Road Carriers of Azerbaijan, the event was held during a meeting of leaders from national road carrier associations of member states within the Organisation of Turkic States (OTS), Caliber.Az reports via local media.
The decision to create the Union was met with unanimous support from all participants.
Azerbaijan’s involvement in this historic development was represented by Habib Hasanov, the head of the Association of International Road Carriers of Azerbaijan, who attended the event on behalf of the country.
This agreement aligns with broader regional cooperation initiatives, as the 12th Summit of the Organisation of Turkic States is scheduled to take place in Azerbaijan in 2025. This decision was ratified during the 11th meeting of the OTS Council of Heads of State, which convened in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, on November 6. According to the Bishkek Declaration, member states agreed on Azerbaijan as the host for the 2025 summit, while Hungary will hold an informal summit for the Organisation.
The Organisation of Turkic States was established in 2009 as a platform for fostering deeper cooperation among Turkic-speaking nations. The founding members of the Organisation include Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Türkiye. Over time, its membership has grown, with Uzbekistan joining as a full member during the 7th Summit in Baku in 2019. Turkmenistan followed suit in 2021, and the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus became a member in 2022. Hungary gained observer status in 2018, while the Economic Cooperation Organisation (ECO) joined as an observer in 2023.
Adhering to principles enshrined in the United Nations Charter, the Organisation is committed to sovereign equality, territorial integrity, and the sanctity of internationally recognised borders. It prioritises the maintenance of international peace and security and aims to cultivate friendly relations among its members.
The Organisation has also broadened its focus to encompass sustainable development and inclusive growth, aiming to foster stronger ties and solidarity among Turkic nations. By prioritising regional collaboration, the OTS strives to act as a dynamic platform for advancing cooperation throughout Eurasia, particularly in Central Asia and the Caucasus. Its mission extends beyond economic development to promoting peace, stability, and shared prosperity for member states and their citizens.
