Turkish president urges Italian PM to lift sanctions on Syria
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan emphasized the need for urgent action to rebuild Syria and lift sanctions imposed on the country during a recent telephone conversation with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.
Erdogan stressed the importance of taking swift steps to restore Syria's stability and economic recovery, highlighting the negative impact of ongoing sanctions, Caliber.Az reports citing Russian media.
The Turkish leader urged the international community to support efforts for Syria's reconstruction, underscoring the necessity of lifting these sanctions to facilitate the process.
In addition to discussing Syria, Erdogan and Meloni also addressed broader bilateral relations, regional matters, and global issues.
Erdogan highlighted the growing economic ties between Türkiye and Italy, noting that the bilateral trade volume had reached $32 billion in 2024. He expressed optimism about further enhancing trade and investment, particularly in sectors such as defence and energy, which Türkiye seeks to strengthen in collaboration with Italy.
The leaders' conversation also focused on expanding cooperation in various fields, reflecting Türkiye's desire to deepen its partnership with Italy on multiple fronts.
