Countdown underway as key Turkish-Armenian border crossing prepares to open
Preparations at Alijan customs post (Margara border crossing on Armenia's side - ed.) have accelerated as the crossing is set to become a key link in the process of normalising relations between Türkiye and Armenia.
Iğdır Governor Fırat Taşolar personally inspected ongoing reconstruction and modernisation work at the border, receiving updates on the current state of the project, Caliber.Az reports via Turkish media.
The Alijan post, closed to civilian traffic since 1993 but briefly reopened for earthquake aid deliveries, is now being readied for permanent operation.
Officials say the reopening of Alijan border checkpoint could boost the region’s economy by facilitating cross-border trade, shortening transport routes through the Caucasus, and encouraging tourism between the two countries. Authorities describe the project as both a diplomatic milestone and a major opportunity for regional development.
Governor Taşolar, accompanied by experts, toured the border facilities and transport routes, noting that the work is scheduled for swift completion.
The reopening of the Alijan customs post represents more than a diplomatic milestone. Analysts say it could boost the regional economy, stimulating cross-border trade, creating logistical efficiencies by shortening transport routes through the Caucasus, and encouraging tourism between the two nations. Local authorities hope the move will bring “a breath of fresh air” to Iğdır and surrounding provinces, fostering long-term economic and social benefits.
