Türkiye’s joint operation leads to arrest of key figure in coup attempt

02 October 2024 15:13

The Turkish National Intelligence Organisation and the Ankara Police Department's Counter-Terrorism Branch executed a joint operation that led to the arrest of FETÖ-affiliated judge Mustafa Karatay, who had been hiding in an Ankara residence.

Mustafa Karatay, a fugitive member of FETÖ, was a key figure in the failed coup attempt on July 15 and served as a crucial operational element within the judiciary. While in hiding, he sought to maintain his ties to the organization, Caliber.Az reports citing, Turkish media.

Acting on a tip-off from a close neighbour, the National Intelligence Organisation conducted extensive surveillance and confirmed that Karatay had been living in the reported apartment for eight years.

During the search of his residence, authorities seized a laptop, tablet, phone, and other digital devices used to communicate with the organisation's leadership. It was found that Karatay was using the Signal app for these communications.

On July 15, 2016, the "Fethullahist Terrorist Organisation" (FETÖ) launched a violent coup attempt in Türkiye, aiming to impose a radical regime under their leader, Fethullah Gülen.

Armed factions seized key locations, including the Bosphorus Bridge, while jets and helicopters bombed strategic sites such as the parliament and presidential compound. The attack resulted in the deaths of 251 civilians and injuries to thousands. In response, Turkish citizens defended democracy, demonstrating significant resistance.

FETÖ, initially established in the late 1960s as a purported "religious movement," had infiltrated various sectors, including the military and judiciary, over decades. The failed coup highlighted their long-term, covert agenda.

Globally, awareness of FETÖ’s threat is growing. The organisation is involved in illegal activities such as visa fraud, money laundering, and arms trafficking, leading many countries to expel FETÖ members from public and private sectors.
