Türkiye seeks extension of Russian gas transit agreement through Ukraine in 2025

30 November 2024 10:32

Türkiye is hopeful about extending the agreement for the transit of Russian gas through Ukraine in 2025, according to Turkish Energy Minister Alparslan Bayraktar.

He emphasised that such an extension would not only benefit Türkiye but also the entire European continent, predicting a positive effect on gas prices, Caliber.Az reports referring to Russian media.

“In this case, Türkiye is ready to do what it takes, but I think the agreement will still be extended,” Bayraktar stated.

The minister highlighted that Türkiye, with its advanced gas infrastructure, is well-positioned to contribute to ensuring energy supply security.

Bayraktar also reiterated that Russia remains a dependable gas partner for Türkiye, assuring that there should be no disruptions in the import of Russian natural gas, despite the sanctions the U.S. has imposed on Gazprombank.

“Russia is an important and reliable gas partner of Türkiye. We need energy carriers in large volumes for our economy. Even in the politically most difficult times, Russia has been a reliable supplier and a safe market. For this reason, we are against anything that could affect this flow,” Bayraktar said.

“We are against any decision that will affect gas imports from Russia. We say that these sanctions will damage Türkiye's economy if it comes to that,” he added.

Earlier, Bayraktar confirmed that Türkiye has been in talks with the United States to ensure that sanctions would not impact the country's payments for Russian natural gas.

On November 21, the US Treasury Department announced new sanctions targeting several individuals and entities, including Gazprombank, which had previously been exempt from restrictions. As a result, Gazprombank UnionPay payment system cards were no longer accepted in Turkish banks starting November 23.

In related news, Moldova's authorities are preparing to address the European Commission (EC) if Ukraine halts the transit of Russian gas. Vadim Ceban, vice-chairman of Moldovagaz, noted that Moldova would also explore alternative routes, including through the Trans-Balkan corridor.
