Türkiye urges Armenia to drop territorial claims from legal documents
Ankara will never take a step that contradicts Azerbaijan’s interests, and Armenia must take concrete actions to foster regional peace, former Turkish Ambassador to Azerbaijan Hulusi Kılıç has stated.
Speaking to local media, Kılıç, who also represents the İMZA Social Development Support Public Association in Türkiye, emphasised that Armenia must remove any clauses or references from its official documents and legal frameworks that raise concerns among neighbouring countries, per Caliber.Az.
According to him, such a step is essential for building trust and establishing stable, healthy interstate relations in the South Caucasus.
Kılıç pointed out that both the Armenian Constitution and the Declaration of Independence of Armenia were drafted with disregard for future diplomatic relations, as they prioritise the nationalist concept of a so-called "Great Armenia."
He also expressed concerns about the policies of the current Armenian government, stating that its actions do not contribute to genuine peace in the region.
“Armenia continues to arm itself aggressively while staging provocations along its border with Azerbaijan. The shelling of Azerbaijani Armed Forces positions has not ceased,” Kılıç noted, stressing that the revision of Armenia’s Basic Law is not only a demand of Azerbaijan but also of Türkiye.
Additionally, Kılıç highlighted the stance of Armenian opposition parties, which openly declare their intention to revoke any agreements signed by Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan’s administration.
“Yerevan must understand that Türkiye will not take any actions that go against Azerbaijan’s interests. Their statements must be backed by real actions — this is what both Baku and Ankara expect,” the former ambassador concluded.
