Ukrainian MP urges int’l community to give legal assessment of Khojaly crimes

26 February 2024 19:27

Member of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine from the ruling Servant of the People Party Yuriy Kamelchuk has called on the international community to give a legal assessment of the crimes in Khojaly.

“The Khojaly genocide was not legally assessed in its time, which opened the way for new crimes against humanity, particularly in Ukraine,” Kamelchuk told Report.

"32 years ago, with the support of the 366th regiment of the former USSR, Armenian militants committed a terrible genocide in the Azerbaijani town of Khojaly. Unfortunately, the perpetrators have not yet been brought to justice. After that, their patrons committed similar crimes elsewhere. Russia invaded Ukraine in 2014 and started a large-scale war in 2022," the MP said.

According to him, this is the result of the world's inaction and one of the biggest mistakes of the international community.

"The world should not be silent. The crimes committed in Khojaly and other places should be given a legal assessment," Kamelchuk emphasized.

The Ukrainian MP noted that on the 32nd anniversary of the Khojaly genocide, the world community focused on the causes of the tragedy. According to Kamelchuk, the "Justice for Khojaly" campaign helped to draw the attention of the world community to the bloody events of 1992.
