UN conf condemns France's actions in New Caledonia, Corsica, and Martinique
During an international conference organized by the Baku Initiative Group at the UN headquarters in New York, discussions centred on "Towards Independence and Fundamental Freedoms: The Role of the C-24 in Ending Colonialism" strongly condemned France for its actions in New Caledonia, Corsica, and Martinique.
Caliber.Az reports citing Azerbaijani media that the event was held alongside the annual meeting of the ad hoc committee - C24 - established to implement the UN Declaration on the Granting of Independence to Colonial Countries and Peoples. It featured Richard Tuheiava, director of political affairs of French Polynesia's ruling Tavini party, alongside representatives from St. Maarten, Corsica, Martinique, and other independence movements from French Guiana, Guadeloupe, and Bonaire, who spoke at length about the colonial policies of France and the Netherlands.
Moreover, they also elaborated on the gross violation of fundamental rights of indigenous peoples, illegal plundering of their natural resources and failure to fulfil international obligations, and strongly condemned the continuation of colonisation policy by France.
The participants expressed deep gratitude to Azerbaijan for bringing the demands of the people they represent to the world community.
They noted with the support of the Baku Initiative Group acting as an international platform their people will soon gain independence.
A political appeal was adopted at the end of the conference. The participants pledged to intensify their participation in regional and global events organised by the UN and strengthen their struggle within the UN.
