US envoy envisions ceasefire, permanent peace deal for Ukraine

19 April 2025 17:51

US Presidential Special Envoy for Ukraine and Russia, Keith Kellogg, expressed confidence that the process of resolving the ongoing Ukrainian conflict is progressing in the right direction.

Kellogg outlined a vision for a comprehensive ceasefire and a potential long-term peace agreement, Caliber.Az reports citing Russian media.

"When I talk about a comprehensive ceasefire, I mean a ceasefire at sea, in the air, on land, including industrial facilities, for a minimum of 30 days," Kellogg explained. "Then it will develop into a longer peace deal — a permanent peace deal. I believe we are on the right track."

Kellogg’s comments come amidst ongoing global concerns about the prolonged conflict in Ukraine, which has led to substantial geopolitical and humanitarian challenges. The envoy’s optimistic outlook follows increasing pressure from international stakeholders for a resolution.

He also addressed a recent statement by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who warned that Washington might abandon efforts to resolve the crisis if tangible progress is not made soon. Kellogg acknowledged the gravity of Rubio's remarks but defended their necessity. "His words were tough, but they had to be tough, because we are tired of what is happening. There are too many events in the world that the US needs to get involved in, and this war has been going on for too long," Kellogg remarked.

Despite the frustrations expressed by some in the US government, Kellogg believes there is still a window of opportunity to end the conflict. "But I think there is an opportunity [to end the conflict]," he concluded, reaffirming his belief that a solution is achievable.

Earlier, European officials noted that Washington’s threats to abandon the negotiation process over Ukraine were primarily directed at Kyiv rather than Moscow.

"Two European diplomats confirmed Rubio said Trump was losing his patience and might withdraw from the process if a deal wasn't reached soon”, adding that "three European diplomats felt Rubio's comments were mostly aimed at the Ukrainians."

A source close to the Ukrainian government also said it seemed Rubio's comments were aimed at pressing Ukraine. The source was also concerned that a Trump withdrawal from the negotiations could lead to suspension of US military aid to Ukraine.
