US State Department wants early peace between Baku and Yerevan But uses Armenian narratives
On September 14, State Department Spokesperson Matthew Miller while briefing reporters and responding to questions on a range of international topics, said the US really wants to reach a peaceful resolution in the Azerbaijan-Armenia settlement.
Miller was asked to comment on the visit of Senior Adviser for South Caucasus Negotiations Louis Bono to Yerevan, Caliber.Az reports citing the State Department's website.
"No specific readout, other than he continues to engage both on the short-term priority, which is to re-open the 'Lachin corridor' (Caliber.Az quotes here and hereafter), and of course the – our long-term priority, which I – I say long-term, but we really want it to happen as soon as possible, which is to reach a peaceful resolution to the overall matter," Miller replied.
Asked about Bono's planned visit to Baku, Miller said: "I’m not going to comment on his specific – but if you put a call in to the appropriate bureau, I’m sure they can give you detail."
The State Department official was also asked to comment on a letter from a US lawmaker to President Biden about recognising "genocide" in Garabagh.
"We want the 'Lachin Corridor' to be opened immediately. We have made that clear. Secretary Blinken has engaged with the leaders of both Armenia and Azerbaijan to make it clear that we want the Lachin Corridor to be opened immediately to address the really 'dire humanitarian situation' in Nagorno-Karabakh," Miller said.
