Western officials focus on bilateral relations in Baku, criticize Russia in Yerevan Political scientist says
Armenian political analyst Suren Surenyants has highlighted a notable contrast in the approach of Western officials towards Armenia and Azerbaijan.
Surenyants posted on his social media that Western diplomats visiting Baku consistently emphasize the importance of bilateral relations in their public statements, Caliber.Az reports citing Armenian media.
In contrast, the Western approach to Armenia often includes anti-Russian rhetoric. This was evident in the recent press conference held by French Foreign Minister Stéphane Séjourné, where critical remarks about Russia were made.
Surenyants argues that while the West remains a significant partner for Armenia, the reliance on anti-Russian discourse to shape the dialogue is both problematic and degrading.
He suggests that this pattern reflects a form of diplomatic opportunism, where Western partners offer Armenia a "cheap product" in the form of anti-Russian sentiment, rather than engaging in more substantive and balanced dialogue.
