Wizz Air to launch direct Baku–Bratislava flights in October
Central European budget carrier Wizz Air will launch direct flights linking Baku with the Slovak capital of Bratislava starting this October, Heydar Aliyev International Airport officials confirmed on July 17 in response to an inquiry from local media.
The new Bratislava–Baku–Bratislava service joins a growing list of low-cost offerings at Azerbaijan's primary aviation gateway, which has steadily pivoted toward budget and hybrid business models.
"Today, about half of the airlines operating flights from the airport work under a low-cost or hybrid business model," airport representatives said in a statement. "Currently, about 20 low-cost and hybrid airlines operate direct flights from Baku to more than 20 international destinations."
Port authorities highlighted that low-cost giants and regional hybrid carriers—including Wizz Air, Pegasus Airlines, Air Arabia, flydubai, and flynas—now link Baku directly to major international hubs like Rome, Budapest, Istanbul, Tashkent, Dubai, Sharjah, Antalya, and Aktau.
The airport’s network has undergone significant expansion throughout 2026. Prior to the Wizz Air announcement, carrier FLYONE Asia initiated scheduled flights between Baku and Tashkent, while FLYONE launched services connecting the Azerbaijani capital to Chisinau, Moldova.
Airport officials emphasised that the upcoming autumn connection to Slovakia aligns with a broader national civil aviation strategy.
"Attracting new airlines and developing the route network are part of the consistent strategy of Heydar Aliyev International Airport to expand its international route network," the port authority stated. "This not only provides passengers with a wider choice of destinations and fares but also contributes to strengthening Azerbaijan's connectivity within the international air transport system."
