Georgia, Romania to be connected by digital cable via Black Sea

29 January 2023 09:31

Georgia will lay a cable along the Black Sea bed connecting the country with Romania and facilitating digital data exchange.

The Georgian government's press service made the announcement on January 28 following discussions between Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili and the leadership of the Ministry of Economy and Sustainable Development, according to TASS.

"The meeting reviewed the first phase of work on the historic project to lay a submarine cable on the Black Sea bed, linking the South Caucasus region with South-Eastern Europe. It was noted that the project feasibility study and the geological survey, funded by the World Bank, will be completed in 2023. The total length of the submarine cable will be 1,195 km", the message says.

The press service added that the new cable will help establish high-speed, high-quality digital communication between Georgia and Romania.
