Armenian pundit advocates for coexistence formula with Azerbaijan to preserve statehood

24 April 2024 15:18

Armenian political scientist Areg Kochinyan has underscored the imperative of finding a formula for coexistence with Azerbaijan as a means to safeguard Armenia's statehood. In a statement to Armenian media, Kochinyan emphasized the significance of bilateral negotiations between Armenia and Azerbaijan in reaching a common ground, particularly regarding the delimitation and demarcation process.

"This marks the second instance in history where Azerbaijan and Armenia have found common ground through bilateral negotiations, setting a positive precedent," Kochinyan stated. He commended the government's efforts to involve four villages in the delimitation and demarcation process, highlighting its importance in fostering peaceful relations between the two nations, Caliber.Az reports.

Kochinyan addressed the historical context of territorial discussions, noting that the topic of returning four villages had been present since November 9, 2020. He acknowledged the asymmetry in negotiating positions, emphasizing the need for Armenia to consider its interests within this framework.

"We must acknowledge that the peace process often favors the losing side, and Armenia must navigate these negotiations accordingly," Kochinyan asserted. He elucidated Azerbaijan's rationale for prioritizing discussions on these specific territories, highlighting the absence of civilian populations in the villages and their location outside Armenia's administrative borders.

Expanding on the long-term implications of Armenia's regional positioning, Kochinyan posed a critical question regarding Armenia's future amidst geopolitical realities. He urged a pragmatic approach to fostering relations with neighboring countries, including Azerbaijan and Türkiye, to ensure Armenia's continued independence and stability.

"The notion of relying solely on external allies has proven untenable over the past three decades. Armenia must instead focus on cultivating a framework of coexistence with its neighbors," Kochinyan remarked, cautioning against the notion of expecting salvation from external powers.

Kochinyan's remarks underscore the evolving discourse within Armenian political circles, highlighting the importance of strategic diplomacy and regional cooperation in safeguarding Armenia's sovereignty and future prosperity.
