Azerbaijan accelerating construction of new railway in Zangezur VIDEO
The Azerbaijan Railways company has announced that intensive construction of the Horadiz–Agband railway line, which runs through the Fuzuli, Jabrayil, and Zangilan districts of Azerbaijan, is ongoing.
The construction is progressing rapidly. The process involves laying pre-assembled sleepers and rails onto a prepared embankment, Caliber.Az reports, citing the Azerbaijan Railways.
Thanks to the swift pace of work, construction has been completed to 57 per cent and design work to 83 per cent.
The Horadiz–Agband railway line, which was officially launched by Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev on February 14, 2021, stretches 110.4 kilometres. The line will feature nine stations: Horadiz, Marjanli, Mahmudlu, Khakari, Soltanli, Gumlag, Minjivan, Bartaz, and Agband.
The construction will include three tunnels—one of which, measuring 1,071 metres, is currently under completion—41 bridges, and seven overpasses, totaling more than 500 engineering structures.
The project aims to establish a direct route with the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic and Türkiye.
The new railway will play a crucial role in both passenger movement and cargo transport to the newly liberated territories. Previously, the single-track Horadiz–Agband railway, which once facilitated trains between Baku and Yerevan, as well as Baku and Nakhchivan before the first Karabakh war, was destroyed in 1993 following the occupation of Azerbaijani lands by Armenian forces.
For 27 years, Horadiz station in the Fuzuli district served as the terminus for trains. The new line will extend from Horadiz to Agband settlement in the Zangilan district. Agband settlement is located at the base of the mountain of the same name, on the left bank of the Araz River, 22 kilometres southwest of Zangilan city. The Horadiz–Agband road will significantly contribute to the economic development of the liberated territories.
