Azerbaijan backs Kazakhstan’s initiative on Caspian water conservation
Azerbaijan has welcomed an initiative by Kazakhstan President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev to develop a joint interstate programme aimed at preserving the water resources of the Caspian Sea.
Addressing the Regional Environmental Summit 2026, COP29 President and Azerbaijan’s Presidential Representative on Climate Issues, Mukhtar Babayev, emphasised that addressing global environmental challenges depends on coordinated international efforts involving the UN system, financial institutions, donors, and the expert community, Caliber.Az reports via local media.
He stressed that Azerbaijan will continue working with neighbouring countries to advance the issue on the global agenda and protect the interests of Caspian communities.
“We will not allow the growing crisis to be ignored and call on all partners, Caspian states, and international organisations to move from words to action,” Babayev added.
Kazakhstan President Tokayev previously announced the launch of an interstate programme to prevent further degradation of the Caspian Sea and the establishment of a dedicated Caspian Research Institute to strengthen regional scientific cooperation.
