Azerbaijan joins elite environmental accreditation programme for aviation PHOTO
Azerbaijan Airlines (AZAL) and ATC Azeraeronavigatsia (AZANS) have signed a memorandum of understanding to participate in the esteemed CANSO GreenATM accreditation programme. This initiative aims to enhance environmental responsibility within the aviation industry.
Press service of Azerbaijan Airlines CJSC told Caliber.Az that AZANS is pursuing accreditation under this programme to underscore its dedication to sustainable development.
The agreement to join the GreenATM programme was formalized through the signing of documents by AZAL President Samir Rzayev and CANSO CEO Simon Hockard.
This significant milestone was reached during the World Air Navigation Summit 2024 and the 28th Annual General Meeting of CANSO, held in Baku from June 11 to 13.
The CANSO GreenATM programme provides air navigation service providers with internationally recognized accreditation for their environmental initiatives. It evaluates the environmental impact of these providers and their efforts to reduce emissions. The accreditation process examines various aspects, including aircraft operations on the ground, at airports, and en route, as well as infrastructure. Assessments are conducted across the programme's five levels, indicating the effectiveness of environmental measures.
"Our participation in this programme underscores our commitment to mitigating aviation's environmental impact in Azerbaijan. We anticipate positive outcomes from accreditation for our operations and the broader community. This significant achievement precedes the COP29 summit scheduled for November 2024 in Baku," stated AZAL President Samir Rzayev during the signing ceremony.
In adopting the GreenATM initiative, Azeraeronavigatsia ATC aims to set a precedent by fostering discussions on sustainable development and inspiring other stakeholders in the aviation industry to adopt similar initiatives.
"We appreciate Azeraeronavigatsia ATC and Azerbaijan Airlines for their proactive involvement in the CANSO GreenATM programme. Their dedication represents a pivotal stride towards realizing a sustainable future for global air traffic management," remarked Simon Hockard during the presentation.
