Azerbaijan ramps up restoration of historic landmarks in Karabakh

27 February 2025 14:26

Azerbaijan’s Ministry of Culture is advancing efforts to restore and conserve historical and cultural heritage sites across the country, including in recently liberated territories of Karabakh.

Several restoration projects are being developed as part of this initiative, Caliber.Az reports via local media.

These include the rehabilitation of monuments in the liberated regions, where work is being carried out in cooperation with the Heydar Aliyev Foundation.

The ministry has already completed the restoration of the Imarat complex in Aghdam and has drafted a project for the renovation of the State Drama Theatre building in Khankendi. Work is also underway to restore the Askeran Fortress complex in the Khojaly district.

“The Heydar Aliyev Foundation has restored several key sites, including the museum-mausoleum of Molla Panah Vagif, the Upper and Lower Govhar Agha mosques, as well as the Mamay and Saatly mosques in Shusha. The Juma Mosque in Aghdam has also undergone restoration,” the ministry said.

In Zangilan, the historical mosque has been preserved, and a new mosque has been constructed. Restoration is ongoing at the Chol Gala Mosque in Shusha, the Giyasli Mosque in Aghdam, and the Malibeyli Mosque in Khojaly.

The foundation has also restored a monument to composer Uzeyir Hajibeyli, his house-museum, the bust of Molla Panah Vagif, the Mehmandarov's estate complex, a branch of the Carpet Museum, and the historic Shirin Su hamam (bathhouse)," the ministry added.
