Azerbaijan reaffirms focus on renewable energy, aims for 30% by 2027 PHOTO
Azerbaijan is placing significant emphasis on increasing its renewable energy production and exporting "green" energy to the European Union (EU), according to Rena Humbatova, Deputy Director of the State Agency for Renewable Energy.
Humbatova made these remarks during the 15th session of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) Assembly, which took place in Abu Dhabi on January 11-13, Caliber.Az reports via local media.
At the opening of the Assembly, Humbatova shared key details regarding Azerbaijan's national priorities in the field of renewable energy. She highlighted the country’s commitment to its socio-economic development goals, particularly the aim of becoming a "Clean Environment and Green Growth Country" by 2030. She also referenced the "Strategy of Socio-Economic Development of Azerbaijan for 2022-2026," which focuses on several key areas, including the efficient use of natural resources, energy sector liberalization, energy efficiency, renewable energy utilization, as well as promoting "clean transport" and "clean energy."
"We are working to significantly increase the share of renewable energy in our energy production and also aim to be a key exporter of green energy to the European Union," Humbatova stated.
Additionally, Humbatova noted Azerbaijan's recent accession to the "UAE Consensus" within the framework of COP28. She explained that Azerbaijan is aiming to triple its installed renewable energy capacity by 2030, a goal that is part of its broader efforts to transition to more sustainable energy solutions.
"Azerbaijan is committed to achieving 30 per cent renewable energy in our installed capacity by 2030, with plans to reach this target even earlier, by 2027, as long as we maintain the current pace of our energy transition," Humbatova added.
She also shared that in 2024, the share of "green" electricity in Azerbaijan's total electricity production is expected to reach 13.5 per cent, marking a significant step in the country's renewable energy development.
