Azerbaijan's Parliament slams EU-Armenia statement, accuses Yerevan of insincerity in peace process

27 February 2025 14:37

The Milli Majlis of Azerbaijan (Parliament) has strongly condemned the statement issued by the EU-Armenia Parliamentary Partnership Committee on February 25, calling it yet another example of a coordinated campaign to vilify Azerbaijan by both the European Parliament and Armenia.

The Azerbaijani Parliament asserts that this statement, coming ahead of the anniversary of the Khojaly genocide, exposes the true nature of both Armenia and the European Parliament, accusing them of making baseless and unfounded allegations against Azerbaijan, Caliber.Az reports citing local media.

In a statement, the Milli Majlis emphasized that such declarations from the European Parliament highlight Armenia’s insincerity regarding the peace process with Baku. The Azerbaijani Parliament further criticized the document, noting it reflects deep antipathy toward Azerbaijan and serves to undermine efforts for a peaceful resolution in the region.

The statement also highlighted Armenia’s long history of aggression and human rights violations, accusing the country of supporting fascist ideologies, committing war crimes, and perpetrating acts of genocide. These actions have led to the displacement of hundreds of thousands of Azerbaijanis, the statement said, noting that Armenia's actions remain unaddressed by international bodies, including the European Union.

Azerbaijan’s legislature pointed out the inconsistency in the European Parliament’s stance, citing that despite numerous international resolutions, including four UN Security Council resolutions, the European Union and Parliament have never imposed sanctions on Armenia. Instead, they have contributed to the illegal occupation of Azerbaijani territories.

The Milli Majlis also condemned the European Parliament’s failure to address the issue of landmines left behind by Armenia in the occupied territories of Azerbaijan. These mines continue to hinder the recovery and reconstruction process in Azerbaijan. Furthermore, the statement expressed regret over the European Parliament’s indifference to the fate of over 4,000 Azerbaijanis still missing since the conflict.

In conclusion, the Azerbaijani Parliament rejected the EU-Armenia statement as unilateral, biased, and counterproductive to the pursuit of peace and stability in the South Caucasus. It was noted that such actions only deepen divisions in the region and obstruct efforts to reach a lasting peace agreement between Azerbaijan and Armenia.
