Azerbaijan State Border Service seizes over 300 kg of drugs

In May 2002, Azerbaijan’s State Border Service continued measures to ensure reliable protection of the state border, to combat smuggling, illegal migration, and drug trafficking.

Last month, 41 violators of the state border of Azerbaijan were detained: 27 of them are citizens of Azerbaijan, 2 – of Iran, 2 - Ukraine, 1 - India, 1 - Uzbekistan, 2 - Tajikistan, 2 - Morocco, 2 - Pakistan, 1 - Côte d'Ivoire (the Western African country), 1 - Lithuania.

As part of the activities to combat illegal migration, 25 people were detained when trying to cross the state border with fake passports, permanent residence cards, identity cards, and Schengen visas of the member countries of the European Union, according to Caliber.Az. 

In 85 cases, 123 people were detained for violating the border regime, and appropriate measures were taken against them.

As a result of anti-crime measures, 230 people wanted by law enforcement agencies were detained and transferred to the relevant authorities, 357 people were prevented from leaving and 27 people from entering.

Thanks to the measures to combat drug trafficking, 316.24 kilogrammes of narcotic drugs and 8,010 units of psychotropic substances were seized from illicit trafficking. In one case, drug smugglers offered armed resistance to border guards, and in compliance with the law, one AKM-74 assault rifle was seized by border guards with using weapons.

As part of the fight against smuggling, prohibited goods totalling over 15.8 million manats ($9.3 million) were seized, including tobacco products, alcoholic beverages and antiques.
