Azerbaijan to launch new upstream projects, boosting gas exports to Europe
Azerbaijan plans to bring four new upstream oil and gas projects online between 2026 and 2029, enhancing the country’s production capacity and export potential, Energy Minister Parviz Shahbazov announced.
Speaking at the 12th Southern Gas Corridor Advisory Council Ministerial Meeting and the 4th Green Energy Advisory Council Ministerial Meeting, Shahbazov said the first gas from the Azeri-Chirag-Gunashli free gas development project is expected this year. In addition, four other exploration projects are underway, both onshore and offshoreç Caliber.Az reports via local media.
“Despite positive developments, including the entry of UAE’s ADNOC (XRG) as a shareholder in the Southern Gas Corridor, a clear and long-term political framework backed by concrete financial mechanisms is necessary for a significant increase in supplies to Europe,” Shahbazov noted.
The minister also highlighted progress on renewable energy, providing an update on projects to develop 8 GW of capacity for domestic consumption and export.
Shahbazov emphasized the strategic importance of establishing “green” energy corridors and interconnectors, including Caspian – Black Sea – Europe, a direct route from Nakhchivan, Azerbaijan – Türkiye – Europe (including via Armenia), the Trans-Caspian route, and the East–West corridor.
“These interregional energy links and electricity supplies will further strengthen Azerbaijan’s role in ensuring Europe’s energy security,” he said.
