Azerbaijani documentary on erased heritage in Armenia competes for international award

11 September 2024 20:16

A film produced by Azerbaijan's CBC TV channel has been nominated for an award at a prestigious film festival in Amsterdam.

The film titled "The Hidden Heritage of Yerevan" was created under the direction of CBC Director General Vugar Khalilov, Caliber.Az reports, citing local media.

The film highlights the systematic efforts over decades in Armenia to erase Azerbaijani heritage, obliterate the memory of Yerevan's founders and former residents, and eliminate any mention of Azerbaijanis. The CBC film crew visited Yerevan, exploring neighborhoods that were once densely populated by Azerbaijanis. Notably, they filmed in the area where the Tepebasi Mosque once stood, now home to Armenian families.

It was revealed that French and American investors plan to demolish the mosque's remnants along with the surrounding neighborhood once inhabited by Azerbaijanis. The crew also documented the house of Panah Khan Makinski's son, Alikhan, and filmed both the interior and exterior of the Blue Mosque in Yerevan, as well as Jafarabad village, where the Mausoleum of Emir Saad is located. The Around International Film Festival (ARFF) is an independent annual event showcasing feature films, documentaries, and short films competing for IMDb awards.
