Note that, Victory Day, marked annually on May 9, commemorates the defeat of Nazi Germany in 1945. Azerbaijan, then a constituent republic of the Soviet Union, played a pivotal role in the Allied victory during the Second World War. Over 600,000 Azerbaijanis were mobilised into the Red Army, with tens of thousands never returning. Azerbaijani divisions fought bravely on multiple fronts, including in the Battle of Stalingrad and the liberation of Eastern Europe.
Beyond military contributions, Azerbaijan’s strategic importance was underscored by its oil production. The oil fields of Baku supplied approximately 75–80% of the Soviet Union’s fuel during the early years of the war. This energy resource proved critical to sustaining Soviet armoured divisions, aircraft, and naval operations. The Nazi military’s failure to capture Baku during the 1942 Caucasus campaign was a turning point in the conflict.
The Azerbaijani people also supported the war effort through industrial output, the evacuation of factories from occupied Soviet territories, and the care of wounded soldiers.
