Azerbaijani FM holds diplomatic talks with foreign counterparts in New York
Azerbaijan’s Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov has held high-level meetings with his counterparts from various nations during the 79th session of the UN General Assembly's High-Level Week in New York.
The meetings focused on strengthening political, economic, and humanitarian cooperation, Caliber.Az reports via the Foreign Ministry.
In his meeting with Colombia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Luis Gilberto Murillo, Bayramov highlighted the significance of developing bilateral relations, noting the three decades of diplomatic ties between the two countries.
“The importance of high-level mutual visits, mechanisms for political consultations, and the strengthening of interagency relations in key sectors cannot be overstated,” Bayramov said.
Both ministers discussed prospects for collaboration within international organisations, with Bayramov emphasising Azerbaijan’s keen interest in partnering with Colombia, particularly in light of the upcoming 29th session of the UN Climate Change Conference (COP29), which Azerbaijan is hosting this year.
Bayramov also briefed his Colombian counterpart on the new realities in the region following Azerbaijan’s restoration of sovereignty and territorial integrity, mentioning the extensive reconstruction efforts in liberated territories.
“The process of normalisation and peace talks between Azerbaijan and Armenia remains a priority,” he added.
The two sides exchanged views on potential new areas of cooperation and other matters of mutual interest.
The Azerbaijani Foreign Minister also met with Kenya's Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Diaspora, Musalia Mudavadi. The discussions centred on expanding bilateral cooperation and enhancing multilateral engagement.
Bayramov expressed his satisfaction with the current level of cooperation between Azerbaijan and Kenya, especially within international organisations like the UN and the Non-Aligned Movement. He thanked Kenya for its support of Azerbaijan’s initiatives during its chairmanship of the Non-Aligned Movement.
"I look forward to further strengthening our cooperation in various formats, utilising the opportunities available," Bayramov stated.
The recent opening of Azerbaijan’s embassy in Kenya was also cited as a crucial step in deepening the relationship between the two nations.
Climate change was another key topic during Bayramov’s meetings. He provided an update on Azerbaijan’s preparations for COP29, stressing the significance of collaborating in the fight against climate change.
In a separate meeting with the European Union's Climate Commissioner, Wopke Hoekstra, Bayramov discussed Azerbaijan’s priorities for COP29 and EU-Azerbaijan cooperation in addressing climate challenges.
He also met with Luxembourg’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Xavier Bettel. The two officials explored avenues for enhancing bilateral relations, while Bayramov took the opportunity to brief Bettel on the post-war situation in the South Caucasus, as well as the current state of peace talks and efforts to normalise relations between Azerbaijan and Armenia.
The series of meetings reflects Azerbaijan's active engagement on both bilateral and multilateral fronts, underscoring its role in fostering international cooperation on key global issues, including climate change and regional stability.
