Azerbaijani FM, OSCE PA vice president explore regional issues, climate action
Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov has met with Pere Joan Pons Sampietro, Vice President of the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly (OSCE PA), who is on a visit to Azerbaijan to participate in the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP29) to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change.
Discussions during the meeting focused on the development of cooperation between Azerbaijan and the OSCE, particularly within the context of COP29, as well as the broader regional situation, Caliber.Az reports.
The sides highlighted the importance of the ongoing dialogue between Azerbaijan and the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly, emphasizing the value of parliamentary diplomacy and mutual visits to address common issues of interest.
Minister Bayramov stressed that climate change poses a significant threat to population security and sustainable development, underlining Azerbaijan's commitment to intensifying efforts to mitigate its impacts, especially for the most vulnerable groups. He noted that this was a priority of Azerbaijan's Chairmanship during COP29.
The meeting also touched on the achievements made during Azerbaijan's presidency of COP29, including agreements reached during the negotiations, such as the approval of the session's agenda on the first day, the adoption of Article 6.4 of the Paris Agreement, and the increase of climate finance commitments from $75 billion to $170 billion annually.
Bayramov also took the opportunity to brief the OSCE PA Vice President on the history of the Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict, the consequences of the Armenian military occupation, and the current situation in the post-conflict period. He provided updates on the ongoing peace negotiations and the progress made toward regional stability.
In response, Sampietro congratulated Azerbaijan on its leadership role as the COP29 chair and wished the country continued success in its climate-related efforts. He also emphasized the OSCE's commitment to combating climate change and supporting international cooperation in addressing its challenges.
