Baku, Bishkek sign 2024-2025 energy cooperation roadmap
Azerbaijan and Kyrgyzstan have formalized a new stage of energy collaboration by signing key agreements, including a cooperation roadmap for 2024-2025.
According to the Azerbaijani Ministry of Energy, this development followed a meeting at COP29 in Baku between Azerbaijan's Energy Minister Parviz Shahbazov and Kyrgyzstan's Energy Minister Taalaibek Ibraev, Caliber.Az reports.
During their discussions, both ministers explored avenues for bilateral energy cooperation. The signed “Roadmap for 2024-2025 on energy cooperation between the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Kyrgyz Republic” outlines joint efforts in the oil and gas sector, renewable energy, and the formation of a dedicated working group to advance these initiatives.
Additionally, a Memorandum of Understanding and Cooperation was signed between Kyrgyzstan’s State Organisation “Green Energy Fund” under the Cabinet of Ministers and Azerbaijan’s State Agency for Alternative and Renewable Energy Sources under the Ministry of Energy.
Azerbaijan is also poised to sign three new agreements with Chinese companies, focusing on renewable energy storage systems and energy efficiency. As announced by Energy Minister Parviz Shahbazov at a COP29 press conference, these agreements mark further progress in Azerbaijan’s green energy initiatives. “COP29 was memorable for many successes demonstrating Azerbaijan's determination in green energy transformation,” Shahbazov stated.
Highlighting the achievements, he added: “These include laying the foundation stone of a solar power plant in East Zangezur, important decisions at the energy ministers’ meeting on the Green Energy Corridor, and an agreement among Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, and Uzbekistan for developing and exporting green energy.” He also noted the inclusion of Saudi Arabia in the project and mentioned Azerbaijan’s new hydrogen strategy and a memorandum with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
Shahbazov further announced that the results of Azerbaijan's first solar power plant auction, which involves a 100 MW capacity project, will be revealed in a week. “On November 21, the results of the first auction on a solar power plant with a capacity of 100 MW will be announced,” he said.
Additionally, a financing decision for two solar power plants with a total capacity of 760 MW is expected on Saturday. Shahbazov elaborated, “The opening of the ECO Clean Energy Centre will take place today, and tomorrow a final decision will be made on financing two solar power plants with a combined capacity of 760 MW.”
