Baku, Tehran agree to deepen law enforcement cooperation
The Prosecutor General of Azerbaijan, Kamran Aliyev, has discussed expanding cooperation with Iran’s ambassador to Azerbaijan, Mojtaba Demirchilou, focusing on joint efforts to combat crime.
During the meeting, Aliyev expressed condolences over the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, as well as over the deaths of civilians in recent events, Caliber.Az reports, citing the Prosecutor General’s Office.
He voiced confidence in the swift restoration of peace in the region.
He noted that the peoples of Azerbaijan and Iran are bound by historical, cultural and religious ties, and stressed that friendly relations between the heads of state contribute to deeper cooperation, including in the legal sphere.
In turn, Demirchilou thanked the Azerbaijani side for the warm reception and emphasised the importance of bilateral relations.
He particularly highlighted President Ilham Aliyev’s visit to the Iranian embassy to offer condolences, as well as Azerbaijan’s comprehensive support.
“Azerbaijan became the first country to provide humanitarian assistance to Iran, which is of particular importance to us,” the diplomat said, adding that the provision of transit facilities for humanitarian cargo from other countries also represented an important gesture of friendship.
The two sides discussed cooperation between law enforcement agencies, including the fight against various forms of crime, particularly drug trafficking, legal assistance in criminal cases, extradition and the transfer of convicted persons, as well as improving the effectiveness of cooperation in these areas.
They also exchanged views on organising reciprocal visits aimed at further developing bilateral cooperation.
