Baku to host first Go Net Zero Energy Summit

28 August 2025 19:27

Baku will host the Go Net Zero Energy – Caspian and Central Asia Summit for the first time on December 3–4, under the theme “Unlocking the Region’s Potential for Clean Energy Development.” The event is set to become a major platform for dialogue on sustainable energy and the energy transition in the Caspian and Central Asian region.

The summit will bring together policymakers, investors, and industry leaders to discuss regulatory reforms, infrastructure development, and financing mechanisms for clean energy projects. Key sessions will focus on integrating renewable energy sources into national power systems, advancing digital and hybrid solutions to maintain grid stability, and exploring innovative technologies such as large-scale energy storage and “green hydrogen," Caliber.Az reports via local media

Azerbaijan, which has pledged to make its energy sector one-third “greener” by 2027, is expected to showcase recent achievements such as the launch of the Garadagh Solar Power Plant and upcoming offshore wind initiatives in the Caspian Sea. Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan will also highlight their efforts to modernize power grids and introduce legislation aimed at attracting clean energy investment.

Particular attention will be given to the region’s emerging green hydrogen sector, which is seen as strategically important for both domestic use and export. Discussions will cover the challenges of high production costs, water scarcity, and infrastructure needs, alongside opportunities for supplying hydrogen to the European Union. Azerbaijan is preparing to launch green hydrogen production in Sumgayit as part of its broader decarbonization strategy.

According to national plans, Azerbaijan intends to commission eight industrial solar and wind power plants with a combined capacity of about 2 GW by 2027, supported by $2.7 billion in foreign and domestic investment.

These projects are expected to generate 5.3 billion kWh of clean energy annually, raise the share of renewables in the energy mix to 32.6%, save 1.2 billion cubic meters of natural gas, and cut greenhouse gas emissions by 2.5 million tons each year.

Looking further ahead, Baku aims to expand renewable capacity to 6 GW by 2030, with 4 GW designated for export, positioning Azerbaijan as a key clean energy supplier in the wider region.
