Climate activists are holding a demonstration in the Blue Zone at COP29 in Baku to protest against the use of fossil fuels.
The demonstration is aimed at challenging the influence of major industrial polluters present at COP29, Caliber.Az reports per local media.
The activists are also calling for equitable climate financing and an end to environmental pollution.
Notably, COP29, held from November 11 to 22 at Baku Stadium, marks Azerbaijan’s first time hosting a COP summit, underscoring its growing leadership in global climate action. The event featured the signing of a Host Country Agreement between Azerbaijan and the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change Secretariat.
A key focus of COP29 was establishing a New Collective Quantitative Goal (NCQG) for climate finance. The Azerbaijani presidency introduced 14 initiatives linking climate action with the Sustainable Development Goals, covering areas such as green energy corridors, energy storage, clean hydrogen, methane reduction, and green digital technologies. Additionally, the establishment of a Climate Finance Action Fund was proposed to help keep global warming below 1.5°C.
Throughout the summit, Azerbaijan's commitment to climate change and environmental protection was emphasised, with President Ilham Aliyev highlighting the country’s significant role in global climate initiatives.
