COP29 chief: Azerbaijan’s initiatives backed by over 100 countries

01 October 2025 11:52

More than 100 countries have expressed support for Azerbaijan’s initiatives presented at the COP29 climate conference, COP29 President Mukhtar Babayev announced during the ongoing Baku Climate Action Week (BCAW2025).

Highlighting Azerbaijan’s role within COP29, Babayev noted that negotiations on water resources and agriculture were conducted at the country’s initiative, as per local media.

“More than 100 countries supported Azerbaijan's initiatives. We will continue these initiatives at COP30,” he said, emphasising the nation’s growing influence in shaping global climate action.

The 29th UN Climate Change Conference (COP29), held in Baku from November 11 to 24, 2024, represented a significant milestone in international climate efforts. Celebrated as the "finance COP," the conference delivered key outcomes aimed at accelerating global climate action.

A major highlight of COP29 was the adoption of the New Collective Quantified Goal, in which developed nations pledged to provide at least $300 billion annually by 2035 to support developing countries in their mitigation and adaptation efforts. This commitment, tripling previous financial pledges, underscored the global dedication to empowering vulnerable nations in combating climate change.

The conference also achieved significant progress on Article 6 of the Paris Agreement, operationalising international carbon markets. This established a robust framework for carbon credit trading and introduced a UN-supervised crediting mechanism, promoting environmental integrity and fostering international cooperation.

COP29 further advanced the operationalisation of the loss and damage fund, ensuring crucial support for communities most affected by climate impacts. Steps were also taken to refine adaptation indicators, strengthening global strategies for resilience. In addition, the Baku Climate Unity Pact emerged as a unifying framework, bringing nations together and laying the groundwork for future progress.
