Direct air link reopens between Yerevan and Aleppo after one-year hiatus
Direct air service between Armenia and Syria has been restored, reconnecting Yerevan and Aleppo after almost a year-long suspension.
According to Lilit Aghabekyan, assistant to the head of Armenia’s Civil Aviation Committee, flights will be operated once a week, on Fridays, by Fly Cham Airlines, beginning on November 7, Caliber.Az reports, citing Armenian media sources.
The Aleppo-based Armenian community newspaper Kantsasar earlier recalled that air connections between Aleppo and Yerevan had been launched and suspended several times in the past due to the unstable security situation in Syria.
The Aleppo International Airport itself had sustained repeated bombings and damage, but after extensive reconstruction work, it has now reopened to receive international flights.
The resumption of direct flights marks the first such connection in nearly a year. Until now, Syrian-Armenians wishing to travel to Armenia had to transit through Beirut, adding time and cost to their journeys.
