Georgia picks President Kavelashvili to represent country at 80th UN General Assembly in US
Georgia will be represented at the 80th session of the UN General Assembly in New York by the country’s president, Mikheil Kavelashvili, who will address the international community in his native language—Georgian, Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze said.
At the 79th UN General Assembly session in September 2024, Georgia was represented by Kobakhidze himself. At that time, the country’s president was Salome Zourabichvili, with whom the ruling Georgian Dream party had tense relations.
“I think it will be better if Georgia is represented by the president at the UN General Assembly this time. There is also a technical reason,” Kobakhidze said, Caliber.Az informs, citing Georgian media.
The prime minister explained that, given the election campaign, it is difficult for him to personally attend the UN General Assembly, as he is leading the campaign headquarters and directly involved in the electoral process.
“Given these various reasons, I believe that Mikheil Kavelashvili will go to the UN this year. The president of Georgia travelling to New York is absolutely the right decision,” Kobakhidze added.
The 80th session of the UN General Assembly will open on September 9 in New York.
