Georgian president’s technical government proposal – waste of time MP says

14 October 2024 19:12

MP from the "Georgian Dream — Democratic Georgia" ruling party Irakli Kirtskhalia has said that the topic of forming a technical government after the upcoming parliamentary election in Georgia resembles a tragicomedy.

This idea reflects another attempt by Georgian President Salome Zourabichvili to establish a political agenda in the opposition space, Caliber.Az reports, citing Georgian media.

On October 12, Zourabishvili announced her intention to present the composition of the technical government before the election and urged opposition parties to reaffirm their commitment to the "Georgian Charter".

She clarified that the purpose of introducing the technical government ahead of the election is to ensure that the public knows who will be responsible in the government.

"As for the topic of a technical government, it resembles a tragicomedy, a continuation of a poorly executed performance, and another attempt to create some political agenda in the opposition space, which is a waste of time," he stated.

He emphasised that the public will respond to this issue in the upcoming parliamentary election.

"The answer to all of this—this short-sightedness, this insult to the public, and the attempt to obscure the truth—will be delivered on October 26," he added.

Georgia will conduct its tenth parliamentary election on October 26. For the first time in the country's history, all 150 seats in the unicameral legislature will be filled using a fully proportional system. This means that all seats will be allocated based on the overall percentage of votes received by a party in a single nationwide election.

Alongside a five per cent electoral threshold that parties must meet to secure seats, and a prohibition on political blocs, these alterations are set to impact the behaviour and activities of both voters and political parties.
